Fountain, Stanley Park, Vancouver - Treasure Chest Thursday

The Stanley Park fountain in Lost Lagoon was opened in 1936 to celebrate Vancouver's Golden Jubilee. The coloured light displays were an original feature. The fountain was restored in 1986 - for Expo, the World Exposition on Transportation and Communication.

The Tacoma Public Library has another Stanley Park postcard [ID # Fleming-131] showing a different view of the fountain - from the same company and likely from about the same time period. Today I'm scanning a potpourri from one of my mother's boxes - letters, telegrams, recipes, newspaper clippings, baby advice...only one photo, I think, and nothing about cars, little brother.

Reading one letter has already made me cry. Silly, I know. Wasn't a sad letter at all. Quite the contrary.

Never mind, here's something of me from her box....

Tulips in the Spring

I participated in another Scanfest today and ended up scanning photographs of my mother's trip to Norway House in Manitoba in 1940. A few are loose photographs; most are in an album - glued to black paper pages. I did finish the set. Now I just have to enter the details.

As soon as I can, I'll put these up on the web somewhere - but now I think I have another word for Randy Seaver...'scandoodling'.

First of all, these weren't in my 'plan' - I'm not that strict, but Christmas is coming and I promised to finish a particular album before then. When I opened a box yesterday though, I thought 'oh, cool'...I should look at these again'.

Then, not that I did nothing else today, but I found myself first off pulling out a Manitoba map, then scanning (ha!) my book shelves for a history, and then it got worse and worse - I was googling to find out this n' that, whatever crossed my mind really while looking at the photos, including what happened later to the S.S. Keenora, (built in 1897).

The answer: as of 1973, she's been up out of the water - at the Marine Museum of Manitoba in Selkirk, Manitoba. I'll be adding that to my 'places I want to go' list.)

Today I'll be participating in the Scanfest for the first time (well, I hope so anyway - if Windows Live Messenger continues to recognize my various identities).

I've pulled out some more of my mum's photos to scan - had to have a good look again last night and mull over some of the family connections, of course. (I think I just found an address for one 'lost' relative by searching with Google this morning!)

Here are a couple of my mum's photos from our trip to California in summer 1961. These three are of me. Funny, I still remember all these outfits; one I still have in my trunk - guess which one.

There are a few photos from Forest Lawn Cemetery which was one of the 'highlights'. My mum wasn't so interested in the burials though, as the art replicas and buildings, including the Wee Kirk o' the Heather church, "a faithful rendition of the village church at Glencairn, Scotland, where Annie Laurie of Scottish lore worshipped". I do remember seeing through this church, but oddly, I don't remember my mum ever mentioning that her cousin, Margaret Agnes DRUMMOND was married there in 1949 (to Andrew Joseph SMITH), although I do have the wedding announcement card here in the 'IRWIN' file. Margaret's mother was my 'Aunty Grandma' (great aunt Maggie IRWIN).

No baby bother along on this trip. Lucky really, as when leaving the cemetery, mum and I were hit by a car and ended up going to hospital in an ambulance. We weren't badly hurt, but we were shaken and bruised. I remember Mum didn't want to call Dad and tell him about it as he'd be sure to tell her to get us right home. She waited a day, and we continued to limp along on almost all our planned excursions.

Why waste our time fussing!
