It's Day 6 of my 21 Day Family Connections Experiment.
This pipe holder is one of my family items, but I have questions about it.
Not about the holder itself; it's quite sturdy, well used, plain with no maker's marks that I can see. Cute dog!
But whose pipe holder was it really?
I had assumed for a long time that it was my grandpa Joe Rogers's. For sure, he smoked a pipe. (I have a couple of his and they've fostered a little DNA dreaming for me for some time.) Grandpa did hunt, I know, so perhaps he did have a dog at one time, or just liked dogs.
But my dad, his son, never mentioned a dog. I'd remember as I know my brother and I would have liked a dog! My mum used to talk about her favourite dog. Dad never chimed in with any dog stories. But there is a dog in some of his family photographs. Was this their dog or ?
Lately I've been wondering if this holder (and that dog) belonged originally to my great grandfather, David Saggers, Joe's father in law. He smoked a pipe sometimes, but then so many men did. My dad mentioned that he even tried it when he was younger. And in my family, for sure, if something was useful to someone, we'd keep it.
I'm going to look through all the photographs again but I believe there's only one interior of grandma and grandma's house. And it doesn't show anything like this. I wonder if any of the family has any others. Another family history mystery...but someone in the family might have a hint.
In the meantime, I'm feeling sure grandpa Joe used this pipe holder, even if it wasn't always his. More later, if I do find more clues!
My paternal grandfather, James Joseph Rogers - Joe - smoking a pipe. He was camping out with a friend here. Here's another photo of the friend sitting in front of the same tent. Given the guns, looks like they were hunting.
Grandpa Joe's friend - could be a South Vancouver resident or a Mountain View Cemetery employee? Or as my dad would say: 'a cousin or someone from church' ! If you recognize him, please be in touch.
