Cloverdale Library - Family History Show & Tell - 13 November 2010

You are invited to attend this upcoming event at the Cloverdale Library:Second Annual Family History Show and Tell!

Last year people who document their family history brought in their creations – there were family quilts, artfully done scrapbooks, storyboards, digital collages and much more. Join in this year and take whatever you’ve made to honour your ancestors. Perhaps you’ll find an excellent Christmas gift idea too.

You are welcome to share by describing your project or by just showcasing your wares. It might be something simple, something elaborate or even a work in progress. A laptop with the Internet and a projector will be available to demonstrate online projects such as family history websites or digital collections.

Visitors without projects are welcome and light refreshments will be available.

Saturday, November 13, 2010, 10:30am – 12:30pm
No charge, donations welcome
Please register at 604-598-7328, or email familyhistory@surrey.ca

Genealogy/Family History Events Coming Up in BC - Free Draw

The sun is shining, spring is almost here, and so many genealogical and family history events are coming up soon in British Columbia. All are reasonably priced or even free.

Since these will be great events (and I'm involved in a number of them - one way or another), I want to highlight them. And already there are several interesting events scheduled for the fall, so watch for more about those later.

The first event, sessions on using the One-Step Webpages for genealogy research with Stephen Morse, is SOLD OUT!

But I have two tickets to give away. If you're a local reader, and you comment on any of my blog posts, including this one, by Sunday, March 21, your name will go in this draw. No spam though! Let me know you're interested in attending the seminar, and let me know how to reach you too. (You can e-mail me at canadagenealogy@shaw.ca with contact info, but be sure to comment on the blog too.)

1916 Prairie Census, Canada - films available at Cloverdale Library, Surrey, BC

The 1916 Canadian prairie census films for Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have finally arrived at the Cloverdale Branch of the Surrey Public Library in British Columbia.

FamilySearch.org now has a searchable index for this census (no census images). See the link below to do a name search to assist you in viewing the microfilm.

If you are doing Canadian research and living or visiting anywhere near Greater Vancouver in B.C., the genealogy department at the Cloverdale Branch Library is THE place to go. It's the largest collection of Canadian material in the west with knowledgeable staff and a good collection of genealogy guides as well. Both Ancestry Library Edition and Heritage Quest are available - in the library only.

For a look at the Cloverdale holdings and information about Canadian genealogical topics, download a free copy of the Canadian Genealogical Resources: A Guide to the Materials held at Cloverdale Library, 15th edition, edited by Laurie J. Cooke, Jacqueline Haines & Stephanie Kurmey.

If you cannot visit, Cloverdale's Genealogy department offers a limited look up service at a nominal cost for specific records on microfilm, in print or genealogy databases. See the webpage for details.
