Today is International Day of the Girl Child

It's International Day of the Girl Child today.

This year's theme: Innovating for Girls’ Education

As of 2011, October 11 became International Day of the Girl Child, a day "to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world."  (United Nations General Assembly Resolution 66/170.)

Thanks to Girl w/Pen for reminding me. Have a look at her thoughtful article for today, "Global Girl Power".  And view the trailer there for the film, Wadjda, by Haifaa al-Mansour.

To the genealogists and family historians in the crowd, post a picture or say a little something about one of the girls in your life (or your family files).

Here's a kindergarten girl from the past, photograph taken in Chilliwack, BC, Canada.
